At 6:38 PM, a tornado watch is now in effect for the 4 county area until 1 AM July 28 2014. This watch includes all NC counties under the jurisdiction of the Greenville/Spartanburg forecast office except Union County, so it includes most of the Charlotte area, Salisbury, Statesville and westward to Bryson City and Brevard. There is a 50% probability of 2 or more tornados occurring within the watch area. By comparison, there was a 40% probability on the evening of March 28, 2010, when a tornado was filmed crossing I-81 just north of Salisbury. Also of concern is a moderate threat for 3 or larger hail in the watch area. Supercell thunderstorms, which have developed and moved across eastern and southeastern Kentucky most of the afternoon are now moving into northeastern Tennessee and northwestern North Carolina. A supercell storm is now located just west of Beech Mountain and about 10 miles northwest of Banner Elk, moving southeastward at 40 mph. Right now a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for Avery County until 7:15 PM but this is still a nasty storm and a tornado warning could go into effect at any time. Other super cells are marching steadily across the I-81 corridor of Tennessee in the direction of the North Carolina mountains. Just now, the severe thunderstorm warning for Avery County was upgraded to a TORNADO WARNING. The southern edges of the warning polygon border NW Burke and northern Caldwell Counties. The disturbance responsible for super cells in southeastern Kentucky is moving east southeastward into our area. In addition to the storms off to our northwest, other storms could develop later this evening in the NC foothills as stronger wind shear and cooler thunderstorm downdrafts collide with the warm and humid air now in place over our area. Beginning now, be prepared for several hours of thunderstorm activity with possible severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings.--Steve.
