At WRAS we are often turned down for grants and other funding and being told it is because we dont benefit the community. However, these same people frequently overlook the benefits to the community which organisation like ours are. After all it is not the animals which phone us for help, it is 3000 plus members of the public desperate for help, anxious and upset, which we are able to relieve and calm, every year. Our ambulances attend out on site to support members of the public who don’t drive, are house bound or disable, are on low incomes and financially or physically can’t deal with a casualty on their property by getting them to a vets or rescue centre. Some people have phobias about wildlife and phone us crying and in a state unable to leave their homes because of a casualty on their driveway. In many situations people would easily become injured or potentially killed if they tried to handle an injured wild animal. Plus we give out a lot of advice to people having problems with wildlife or are unsure about how to help or deal with certain situations involving wildlife in their gardens. We also undertake a lot of education work, at schools/colleges and community events and more. We provide numerous student and back-to-work work placements as well as working with the Youth Offending Team and others. Also do people really want to live in a world where animals are left to suffer around us without any help. It is very easy to think we are just another “animal charity” and we don’t benefit the community, but for the number of people we help and support we are very cost effective. Our charity is a community charity, helping our local community and benefiting the local community.
