At a very young and tender age, at a time when we were expected to - TopicsExpress

At a very young and tender age, at a time when we were expected to do what we were told and not cause any trouble, we listened. We heard things. One of the jewels I had cast before me was a gift from Sister Rita Jean. A nice lady, who would laugh, and play baseball on the lawn outside the church. She talked one day, of dying, and death, and somehow, in the mix, managed to say that when someone died and went to heaven that though they were out of sight, they were still with us---they could see us, be with us in spirit. Naturally, we were to stay on our best behavior because of that. To a little kid, the idea of so many eyes watching every move you made was a bit intimidating. I must admit taking a bath---actually so many things---became a bit awkward to a shy, probably a bit self conscious little pup. Even superman couldnt see through lead. The idea that the deceased and somewhat grouchy old man on my newspaper route knew if I had run to deliver his paper on time, or sinfully dwaddled along the way was a bit more information than I wanted to be too widespread. Of course, growing older, filling our lives with so much activity, so much stuff, we tended to not worry so much about people seeing us in our underwear----or seeing that we were not as perfect as we would have liked to be seen. But when Sister Rita Jean planted the seeds of conscience in our tender brains the deed was done. Very few of us can do wrong and not know what we have done. We know when we have been good or not. We know the difference between right and wrong. If every ancestor we have ever had--can see us or not--is not the point. Granted, their lessons are there----but the point is that we can see ourselves. We see, we know---we live with the result. Live as though you know the difference between right and wrong, as though you know that if we do, if we all could, this world will be a much better place. For all of us.
