August 23, 2014: Woowee - it is hot. A few weeks ago I thought the worst of summer was behind us. This heat wave has definitely been a sweaty one. But, September is not far off and that means we are entering meteorological fall. So, although it is hot now :) - we know it wont last. Temperatures this evening are still in the 80s. Heat index values are STILL in the 90s. THAT my friend is pure summer. A cold front will enter the picture next week. That should usher in cooler air and perhaps increase our rain chances. Speaking of rain chances! Boy, am I glad I dont forecast for some of the counties just a tad east of our region. I thought the best rain chances would be to our north and east, but am surprised just how widespread the precipitation has been over the last few hours. Some of those thunderstorms have made it close to the area I forecast for. Mainly areas near the Indiana and Kentucky border. Any thunderstorms that do occur tonight will produce frequent lightning and heavy downpours. This is most likely to happen over our northeast counties and eastern counties. That would be closer to Carmi, Illinois to Evansville, Indiana and Owensboro, Kentucky then down towards Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Check radar now and then go about 1 county to the west of there. That would be the best chance area for overnight storms. On Sunday the ridge of high pressure will strengthen over our region. I believe there could still be some thunderstorms left in our region. Several boundaries will be drifting around southern Illinois and western Kentucky. Thunderstorms could pop up along those boundaries. I am hard pressure to put the chances above 30% at any given location. I originally had them at 20% for any given area. I think you get the point. Overall the rain chances at any given location SHOULD be small. We will see how that goes. If storms do pop up then lightning, gusty winds, and heavy downpours can be expected. Typical summer type storms. I have been traveling for the past week. I tried to stay up on the weather as much as possible. Hopefully I did okay :) - temperatures and cloud cover have been a bit tricky. Jim and Nick (WSIL) have done quite well on those two topics. I always recommend those who follow me to follow them. They know southern Illinois! Your morning church forecast - perhaps bring the church fans with you to the service
