Average cable charges in our country range from Rs. 250 – 350 per month for a total of 80-100 channels, which make cost of viewing one channel between Rs. 2.50 – 3.50. But there is a group of channels whose per channels cost is Rs. 5.00 – 6.00, Rs. 35 per month in total paid separately from cable bill. There is also news that there is a consideration to raise this fee to Rs. 60 per month, (Rs. 8 -10 per channel cost) Which group of channel it is, it is our government owned Pakistan Television (PTV). We forcefully pay Rs. 35 every month in our electricity bills and now it may rise to Rs. 60 as per media reports. While PTV is the oldest channel in our country and it has a legacy of producing some of the best entertainment content, its current plight is not much encouraging. Like all government run organization PTV normally runs in loss, it is overstaffed and most of the staff is there due to references and political affiliations rather than merit. In short PTV is another burden on public funds; its main source of revenue is TV license fee from electricity bills. Despite its high cost, viewership of PTV’s channels is low and PTV’s program seldom appear in any television rating..
