Avoid power struggles by asking questions instead of giving - TopicsExpress

Avoid power struggles by asking questions instead of giving answers. For example, weve all had this happen. A a child asks at the store, Can I have that? for a certain toy you dont want him to have right now. Instead of saying No! and inviting an argument, calmly say, I dont know. Do you know how much it costs? If he doesnt know, have some fun figuring out the cost together. Once he knows then ask again, Where do you suppose the money will come from? Or, How do you want to earn the money to spend on the toy? Both of these questions invite your child to think for himself about buying the thing, and the money needed to get it. The focus is off of your power, and onto his thinking process. The more you follow this sort of process as a habit, the less youll get in power struggles when you just say No!
