BEACH SAFETY TIP 15: HAZARDOUS BEACH ACTIVITIES There are a variety of activities that beach goers engage in on any given day at the beach. Many of these activities have a certain amount of impact on the safety of others and as a result, lifeguards treat hundreds of people each summer for injuries caused by careless behavior and improper or illegal use of equipment. WHAT IS CONSIDERED A HAZARDOUS BEACH ACTIVITY? A hazardous beach activity is any activity, game, contest, or use of equipment that presents a danger to either the person or people participating in the activity, or to the surrounding public. Lifeguards are in charge of monitoring activities in and out of the water at the beach and advising beach goers when their actions could present a danger. The following is a list of some hazardous beach activities that lifeguards commonly encounter. Beach goers should abstain from these activities for the safety of themselves and others around them: Hard board surfing within a swim area Swimming within a hard board surfing area Skimboarding in populated areas with swimmers and waders Surfing in an uncontrolled or irresponsible manner Using a raft, row boat, or any floating mechanism in the surf zone which is not specifically designed for riding waves Spear fishing in the surf zone; especially near other swimmers or surfers Riding a bike or other man-powered vehicles on the sand or boardwalks at excessive speeds Large organized games on the beach involving tackling, ball throwing or kicking, setting up nets or courts, or general rough-housing Baseball or any game involving hitting a ball with a bat or club Lawn bowling games such as boche ball Digging holes in the sand larger than three feet wide by two feet deep High performance kite flying in crowded conditions Landing or launching of hang gliders or parasails on the beach Water balloon throwing or launching Blocking the path to the water in front of a lifeguard tower or emergency vehicle access paths and roads Using barbeques or fires on the beach outside of designated fire rings Any activity that is not listed above could still be considered hazardous.
