His famous essay, Walkers Appeal to the Colored People of the World, denounced slavery and called for Blacks to mobilize and rise up against it. Anthony Overton, President of the Victory Life Insurance Company, received the 13th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1927 for his successful business, the first Black organization deemed to meet New Yorks strict business requirements. Mary McLeod Bethune, educator, civil rights leader, and founder of Bethune-Cookman College, received the 21st NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1935 for her incredible work with the school. Thurgood Marshall, the countrys first Black Supreme Court Justice, received the 31st NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1946 for his distinguished work in the field of law. Joe Louis won the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion by knocking out Jersey Jo Walcott on this date in 1948. This bout, held in Yankee Stadium, was his historic 25th title defense. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated civil rights leader, received the 42nd NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1957 for his contributions in the Fight for Freedom and his leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Malcolm X founded the Organization for Afro-American Unity on this date in 1964. The Supreme Court unanimously overturned the draft evasion conviction of Muhammad Ali on this date in 1971. The Bakke Decision was handed down by the Supreme Court on this date in 1978. The Court ruled that strict racial quotas that guaranteed access and opportunity to Blacks, women, and other minorities in education and industry were unconstitutional.
