Mary McLeod Bethune, educator, civil rights leader, and founder of Bethune-Cookman College, received the 21st NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1935 for her incredible work with the school. Thurgood Marshall, the countrys first Black Supreme Court Justice, received the 31st NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1946 for his distinguished work in the field of law. Joe Louis won the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion by knocking out Jersey Jo Walcott on this date in 1948. This bout, held in Yankee Stadium, was his historic 25th title defense. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated civil rights leader, received the 42nd NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date in 1957 for his contributions in the Fight for Freedom and his leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
