Dear President Trajan Basescu, the Parliament voted on 25/09/2013 to legalise mass killing as a method of stray dog population control. It is shameful that this new law has been passed after 5 years of the Animal Protection Law, which forbids the killing of any healthy animal. By allowing this killing, you have given the green-light for violent action to be taken, in which stray dogs will not be "euthanized", but murdered by the same brutal methods we witnessed from 2001 to 2008. The fact that we are a member state of the European Union morally compels us to adopt laws that will not instigate violence and killing. Unfortunately, we have already witnessed the illegal killings of stray dogs by brutal methods. This law, which will never be accepted by many citizens, will further deepen the conflicts and accentuate the polarisation of the Romanian society. Through this letter, we appeal to you, the one elected to represent the interest of all Romanians, NOT to endorse a bill that would legalise killing.
