BORNO PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) MEMBERS REJECT THE MINISTERIAL NOMINATION OF HON. MOHAMMED WAKIL The transformation agenda of our Dear President Goodluck Jonathan is very laudable and requires the support and cooperation of all Nigeria for it to make a meaningful impact, beyond articulating the programmes that form the agenda, our President also requires a team that will help in executing his vision. It is for this reason that Mr. President is very careful in picking his Ministers and making changes where necessary to enable him achieve his set objective. In the process of governance in a democratic set up, difficult decisions have to be made by a leader and many factors are considered before arriving at a final decision, but the most essential consideration is National interest. That is why must decision are x-rayed to see her impact on the general wellbeing of the citizens. But truth be told, when you look far through the binoculars, the only senses considered this days in decision making in our democracies are 2, political and economic essential ingredients in the game of power. Meanwhile, it is the prerogative of Mr President to choose who he wants to work with as minister though subject to clearance by the National assembly, however, much consideration should be given to merit, capacity to add value to good governance, patriotism, compassion, grassroot and majority support. In an election year such as we are heading to, party loyalty, mobiliser and bridge builder among party members, grassroot support and ability to pool votes for the party during elections should be strong points to be added for picking nominees among equals. This bring us to the crux of matter, MINISTERIAL NOMINEE FOR BORNO STATE. While PDP is trying to resolve internal problems which is well known to us from national to state levels, PDP is creating a fresh crisis especially in Borno State. If it’s only 25% of the total votes from Borno State is what PDP needs, they should go to sleep and they will have. But this is not what we need as faithful PDP members, it’s a known fact that PDP has always had the day when legitimates votes are counted during elections in Borno Including the 2011, since we are in opposition in the state, the Minister becomes the rallying point for our members, therefore, we need a very strong figure who respects and is respected by our party state executive, Party elders, stake holders, youth and our teaming supporters The nominee we have sent to the senate does not represent the qualities highlighted above, he was not even on the list of nominees submitted by our State party executive, perhaps, his proximity to a member of PRESIDENTIAL STRATEGY TEAM we here earned him his nomination. It’s unfair not to allow our state stakeholders to have an input into choice of our minister who by tradition in a none PDP GOVERNED STATE is leader with the support of the party chairman. . Instead of having peace of mind to provide the much desired good governance expected of our would be minister if cleared, we see a situation where energy will be dissipated on party crisis resolution leaving little time for grass root mobilization and party building. We also feel unhappy that a nominee who was unable to secure more than 2 votes when we attempted to test his popularity to contest governorship of the state in 2003 is now being considered to mobilise supporter in a complex state like Borno with opposition in Power. Since his decimal performance in his attempt at party nomination in 2003, he became dormant at local government and state levels and became instead a regular visitor to one of the South -South state the result of which he lost touch of the party activity at grass root level and cannot today deliver even his ward to PDP. We the active, concerned AND UNREPENTANT members of PDP in Borno State are saying that the Borno State nominee sent for senate clearance does not represent the wishes of our great party members in Borno State as his political value and acceptability does not inspire confidence rather it will weaken the party. We are therefore appealing to our great party leaders from the presidency, National assembly and all stakeholders to prevail on the powers that be to kindly refer to the list of the consensual nominees originally submitted by the state party or else we kindly educate us on what we hope to achieve. Meanwhile, we are not unmindful of the fact the nominee was one time a member of house of representative and a party official, If his nomination is a reward for his closeness to a particular south -south Governor in The Presidents kitchen cabinet, or a compensation for his failed attempt at the position of PDP Chairman we can understand and we say Thank you Mr. president, this is your choice but please sir give us our own.
