Back in the day everything was simple. You had electric blue and purple jelly worms, some devils horses, and some various crankbaits. The way you fished was simple as well- at least compared to the high technology we have today. When jigs became popular the color to use was black and blue, thanks to pros such as Denny Brauer. But as black and blue as a color became more popular- other colors took a back seat. Even today you hear the pros preaching keep it simpler or simpler is better. But, as the lakes receive more traffic, which leads to more fishing pressure, the ole black and blue may become obsolete with so many people throwing it. Sometimes you have to mix it up and show the bass something radically different- which can be easy to do if you put some thought into it. If you ever found yourself fishing a black and blue jig, you either were fishing in chocolate milk, or just needed a color that was visible under water. Well the color black and blue isnt the only color that gives you visibility in muddy water- colors like sapphire blue, Bama bug, okeechobee craw, black gold/yellow can as well. While these colors may not be as simple or straightforward as black and blue, they still get the job done when you need them to. These colors give you even more points of visibility under water. While black and blue was made up of well, black and blue strands- but a color like black gold/yellow gives you 3 points of visibility under the water- the black, the gold flake in the black, and the yellow strands. While the colors talked about above are more complicated than black and blue- they certainly have what it takes to get the job done in either clear water, dirty water, or chocolate milk- the black and gold part of the color is effective in clear water, while the yellow gives visibility and some flash in dirty water. Things like incorporating flake into your skirts can be a difference maker- but so can having more than one or two colors in a skirt.
