Back pain is one of the top reasons that people take a sick day from work. Stop suffering and start walking! When you’re suffering from back pain, your instinct might be to crawl into bed and stay put until the ache subsides, but it turns out there’s a better option: Take a walk. A new study by researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel found that for people who are sedentary but suffering from back pain, walking can be just as effective as an intensive regimen of back exercises. Lower pack pain is often treated with many hours of physical therapy over the course of several weeks, but this study suggests that you may also be able to reduce your pain by walking. For the study, researchers had patients with chronic pain walk for 20 minutes on a treadmill while a second group underwent a strength-training program. The groups experienced an equal amount of relief.
