Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba said before going into camp - TopicsExpress

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba said before going into camp with his preliminary squad that no surprise omissions will be made when the final squad would be announced. Come that very day, and probably the best South African player at the moment, Thulani Serero, was dropped. Why? After announcing the squad who will board for Equatorial Guinea this year for the African Cup of Nations, the room was filled with ‘ooohs and aaahs’ after Serero’s name was not uttered. When asked about the omission of the Ajax Amsterdam star, Mashaba said: “Serero was not good enough. I want to know how your only player, who competes in an elite European league as well as the UEFA Champions League, is not good enough for the national team? Could it be a statement Shakes is making, that no player is guaranteed a place in the team based on merit? It could be, however, it just baffles me as to why a quality player like Serero would be discarded for a big competition. Would the Portuguese national team coach exclude Cristiano Ronaldo from their national team for whatever reason? I doubt it! You need your best players at all times, regardless of what situation they may be in. What do you think was the reason Shakes excluded Serero from the national team?
