Batmalo Grenade update... Seven persons, including four policemen, havebeen injured after a grenade was lobbed at a police vehicle at Batmalo Srinagar today. The four cops were moving a detained former HM militant Shakeel Ahmad Khatana to Baramulla when the incident happened. The civalian identified as Mohd. Shafi Wangno s/o Ab.Gani r/o Hamdania Colony Bemina Sgr, Mohd. Umers/o Mohd Sidiq Najar r/o Natipora Sgr & Gh. Nabi Malik s/o Mohd Subhan r/o Saibug Chek Budgam. Reports say The detained militant Shakeel Ahmad Recieved Serious injuries. A former militant, who severed as guard to United Jehad Council chief Syed Salahuddin, died in a grenade blast in uptown Batamaloo area of Srinagar on Wednesday afternoon. Shakeel Ahmed Kasana, was being shifted to prison when he along with five others were hurt in the grenade blast. The grenade landed and exploded inside the vehicle, injuring four policemen, a civilian, and the undertrial, who later succumbed at a hospital, a police official said. Kasana, a resident of Kralekhayan village of Kangan in Ganderbal district, was arrested last year under Section 7/25 of the Arms Act and slapped with the Public Safety Act. He once served as the guard of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Sallahudin. Police said a hand grenade was hurled at a police vehicle by militants which was passing through Batamaloo today at about 12.30. "The police vehicle was on way to Baramulla Sub-Jail to lodge a detenue Shakeel," he said. Four constables and a civilian Ghulam Nabi Malik got injured, while Shakeel Ahmad Kasana got critically injured, he added. Kasana was referred to SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar for treatment, where he breathed his last. Government forces cordoned off the area immediately after the grenade attack but no one was arrested in the subsequent search operation, he said. The attack comes barely four days after suspected militants brutally killed a policeman by slitting open his throat in Vilgam village of Kupwara district. This is the first militant strike in Srinagar since the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan began last week.
