Bears Wild Weekend with Stephen Fry In the Valley of the Italian Dolomite Mountains while taking a break British actor-host-comedian Stephen Fry discuss with Chief Scout-SAS-FPL, Bear Grylls Stephen Fry: I suppose a man of faith like you, this probably restores your faith in the creation or a creator. Bear Grylls: Yeah, I always find this like a spiritual defrag, you know. And I sometimes lose that in the business of everyday life. Stephen: I am an atheist, Im a humanist because I do have a belief and that is in our capacity to solve our problems and to find out more about the world and the universe around us. But just because one says I dont believe that theres a single god who made it doesnt mean one has to offer an explanation to what did make it. Because if you do believe that theres a single god who made it you have to offer an explanation as to who made that god. And so the argument continues. Bear: I went to school and religion was presented in a way where it was all very cold and impersonal and judgmental... Stephen: Yeah, yeah. Bear: ...and its taken me an awful long time and moments like this to actually...(trails). To me my Christian faith is much more intimate and and stumbling and awkward and personal. I still somehow feel that in this difficult life were loved. Stephen: Yes. Bear: You can feel it all around you no ones holding you up but, its hard to describe if youve never swum. Its actually been the greatest strength In my life you know. Stephen: Im all for that. I get very embarassed and ashamed in front of my fellow atheists who are mocking of people of faith. To me an individualy devout, pious person is a very beautiful thing. Coming into a church, putting in flowers to remember your family and your ancestors. Bear: I have a strange belief in heaven, I really want to see my dad again. Stephen: Thats very...I can understand that. But to me, coz we have history, you have all your dead anscestors alive in your mind. I have my dead grandfather alive in my mind and I dont need to die to be with him. I suppose its very dangerous to get very pretentious in a vast landscape like this because I makes you think of all the imponderable questions come tumbling into your mind. ******************************** Wonderful exchange without one feeling the need to win over the other.
