Because I am old - well, of a certain vintage, lets say - this profile of me in The New York Times didnt seem real until I bought the Sunday Times this morning and opened it up to hold it in my hands. I am humbled by it finally. And hope it is read in the spirit with which I agreed to do it. I thought it would not only help FourTwoNine magazine get some media traction but, in so doing, maybe help someone out there who is struggling himself or herself in life and is feeling hopeless. If one person found some hope in this story, I am happy I agreed to do it. I told Laura Holson, the writer of the piece, more than once that I did not want to be the poster boy for sobriety. That I only had my own personal journey to relate and a part of that was my search for a sober life. Thats all. Ive always been a bit of a one-off and that is still true about my search for such a life. Each person can find his or her own path. But if they are searching for that path I hope this article in some way cleared out some underbrush for them. Made them less fearful to take that first step - the scariest part of the journey - and set them on their way.
