Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; Jan 21, 2014: Bethlehem man charged with attempted murder of pregnant woman Sarah M. Wojcik | The Express-Times By Sarah M. Wojcik A Bethlehem man told police he tried to kill the mother of his unborn child because he could not control his temper, according to court records. Police took Steven Thomas Biechy, 25, to St. Lukes University Hospital in Fountain Hill on Tuesday evening after responding to his home in the 400 block of Wyandotte Street for reports of a suicidal man with a handgun, authorities report. Jean Freyberger contacted Bethlehem police today about what led up to the 911 call Tuesday night, court papers say. Freyberger, who still had visible injuries from an assault at the home, told police she and Biechy were arguing before he turned physically violent, court records say. Freyberger, three months pregnant with Biechys child, tried to leave the home, but the U.S. Army veteran of six years knocked her to the ground and dragged her back inside by her leg, records say. He pulled out his .22-caliber Beretta handgun and pointed the firearm to the victims head, authorities say. Who wants to die first? he allegedly asked repeatedly during the ensuing fight. Biechy pushed Freyberger to the floor of the bedroom, court papers say, and held her in a choke-hold until she nearly lost consciousness. Freyberger told police she thought he was trying to break her neck, according to court documents. Freyberger said Biechy would not let her leave the home for two hours prior to police arriving at the Wyandotte Street home, court papers say. When authorities interviewed Biechy at the hospital today, he described in similar detail the attack on Freyberger, according to court documents, even demonstrating to an officer the rear choke-hold he used on the victim. He told police he was in a full rage and knew he could have killed the victim with his actions, court papers say. Biechy also admitted that he was aware of the victims pregnancy. Biechy was arraigned today before District Judge David Tidd on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault of an unborn child, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and simple assault. He was sent to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
