Sjteam Farsnews ‘Iran self-reliant in building torpedo-launching destroyers’ 14/2/2014 Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the Islamic Republic has attained self-sufficiency in manufacturing different destroyers, including torpedo-launching Sayyari on Thursday said the sanctions imposed against Iran have not impacted the country’s naval operations, adding that the Navy has managed to turn restrictions imposed by the embargoes into opportunities. He said that Iran is self-sufficient in building all of its required defense military equipment, adding that the country manufactures different types of torpedo missiles, destroyers and vessels. Iran started a self-sufficiency campaign in its defense industry after the victory of the Islamic Revolution 35 years ago, making major breakthroughs in producing important military equipment and systems. The Iranian Navy launched its first domestically- built destroyer, Jamaran, in the waters of the Persian Gulf in February 2010. The 1,420-ton destroyer is equipped with modern radar systems and other electronic warfare capabilities and has a top speed of up to 30 knots and a helipad. The vessel, equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons, also features highly advanced anti-aircraft, anti-surface and anti-subsurface missile systems. Iran’s Navy also launched the indigenous Jamaran-2 destroyer, which features state-of- the-art navigation equipment and complex defensive systems. The country also renovated its Shaheed Bayandor destroyer in 2013. Iran is set to launch a new indigenous destroyer, Damavand, in the near future. The Islamic Republic has also conducted several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment. Iran says its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
