Beyond the implications for the Middle East, this is a very interesting conversation about the role of social media in current events. In the context of the Middle East it also brings to mind the discussion about the New York Times photographer the NYT distanced itself from (rather than accepting editorial responsibility) because an overwhelming number of images he sent back showed destruction in Gaza, but very rarely showed a militant firing a rocket into Israel (a ongoing disparity that had occurred to me before that issue came up [tabletmag/scroll/181206/new-york-times-slams-its-own-pulitzer-prize-winning-photographer-in-gaza]), but made me realize upon watching the clip below that a similar disparity seems to exist on social media. On Facebook and Twitter, I see tons of images of destruction in Gaza, with obvious civilians running for cover or covered in blood, but I see few images of the rockets being fired into Israel, of Hamas militants in Gaza firing back at Israeli troops, or anything to balance out the story. It would seem that Israel is relying too much on main stream media to make its case and not enough on social media.
