Bioeconomy Has Evolved And Become A Game Changer For Malaysia: SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 25 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was pleased with how bioeconomy had evolved and become a game changer for Malaysia to become a high-income developed nation. He said bioeconomy would be a key contributor to economic growth for a productive, competitive and innovative economy. Speaking at a press conference after officiating at the Bio-International Advisory Panel Meeting (BIO-IAP) 2013 here, the prime minister said he was proud to note that Malaysia’s bioeconomy was on track and delivering commendable performance. “To date, Biotech Corp has managed to secure total approved investments of US$4.5 billion (RM13.8 billion), which is 53 per cent above the Phase 2 target of US$3 billion (RM9 billion),” he said. Najib said the biotechnology industry had induced more than 80,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The prime minister said the industry was growing and able to create much needed jobs for Malaysians. On the development of BioNexus Status companies, he said it remained the cornerstone on which the national biotechnology industry was hinged upon. “Currently, there are 225 BioNexus Status companies. Investment of companies such as Verdezyne Inc, for example, has helped the approved investment figures for BioNexus Status companies to breach the US$1 billion (RM3.2 billion) mark. ”This is a very positive milestone in the development of the Malaysian biotech industry,” he said. Earlier in his speech, Najib said Malaysia was making great progress and as a testament of the government’s commitment to supporting the Bioeconomy Transformation Programme, he announced a total allocation of close to US$27 million (RM85 million) to support the development of Bioeconomy Malaysia. dlvr.it/41xlSk
