Black History Month begins today! On this day in 1902, Poet, author and intellectual of the 20th century Langston Hughes was born. He would be an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance during the 20s and 30s. Some of his most acclaimed works include poetry collection The Weary Blues and the essay The Negro Artist and The Racial Mountain. Also on this day in 1960, four North Carolina A & T students began the sit in movement at a lunch counter at Woolworth five and dime store. Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain (who just recently passed on Jan 9, 2014), Ezell Blair, Jr. (who would later be known as Jibreel Khazan), and David Richmond were first year students at North Carolina A & T when they were denied lunch service at a whites-only counter. the sit in would pick up steam, with as many as 300 participants on the fourth day, spreading to other stores in Greensboro and other cities throughout the South. This was a crucial step in eliminating legally sanctioned segregation. Have a great Saturday! Take a chance to read up a little on Greensboro! history/topics/greensboro-sit-in sitinmovement.org/history/greensboro-chronology.asp
