Bonnie Latino - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) Verified Purchase(Whats this?) This review is from: Seeds Of Magnolia (Kindle Edition) bit.ly/ordercopy A reviewer of this book faulted the author for not tying up loose ends, i.e. revealing what happened to every character. One suspects that the reader thought Seeds of Magnolia is a novel. It is not; it is narrative non-fiction. In true stories (i.e. real life), which have roots in the 1800s, there are many people who are unaccounted for. In families such as this one with multiple branches, it would be impossible to account for every single person. When people were sold into slavery or were born to people who were never married during in that dark period of our countrys history, records of many, if not most, were forever lost. And lets face it, families are always complicated even in the best of circumstances. I was drawn to this book because of its Kirkus review and the premise of the story, which would be considered genius if it were fiction. As narrative non-fiction its much more complicated. The situation Mr. Miller finds himself in, even today, is surely one of humanitys most complex. He writes of all of his ancestors, the good and the fatally flawed, with compassion and humanity. I award this book four stars, rather than five, for one reason: the handling of dialogue without quotation marks made this a much longer read than would have been necessary, and in many places bogged down the fascinating story. However, I encourage readers not to become discouraged or distracted by that. Anyone who loves history and/or true stories about complex people will enjoy this true American bittersweet story. The title is brilliant and the cover is one of the most lovely I have ever seen. Im honored to have this book in my home library.
