Book reading event held at Doon library Sunday, 07 September 2014 | PNS | Dehradun | Conservation of tigers and wildlife cannot be achieved by implementing Government schemes alone unless a culture of conservation is encouraged in the masses. Action needs to be taken now without delay to ensure that the tiger survives and thrives. This was the view expressed by many at the book reading of ‘Scent of a Game’ by additional secretary in the Government of India Raghav Chandra. The event was organised by Doon Library and Research Centre here on Saturday. The book vividly chronicles human greed by describing hunting and the designs of the wildlife mafia. It spans the jungles of Central India, going on to Nepal, Myanmar, Indonesia, United States and China tracing the illicit trade in endangered species. Informing the gathering about his book, Chandra said that the story revolves around a popular tigress that mysteriously vanishes from the Kanha tiger reserve. A passionate wildlife manager, a journalist and an NRI-unwittingly jailed for a decades old tiger-skin suspected to be that of the missing tigress are among the several characters who find themselves trying to “undo the scent of the game”. Earlier the author made a presentation focusing on the history of tigers in India especially in the last 100 years that saw the population of the big cat declining from about 1,00,000 to a about 1,700. Earlier, the DLRC honorary director BK Joshi introduced the author and the book while also expressing concern at aspects like tiger farms for captive breeding of the big cat. The additional principal chief conservator of forests, Jairaj, chief conservator of forests (Ecotourism) Rajiv Bhartari, Prof Dhirendra Sharma, IAS officer Sanjeev Chopra and others also expressed their views on tiger conservation and the book on the occasion. DLRC adviser Rajen Brijnath proposed the vote of thanks.
