Bookworm Blast – Summary of Summer Reads series – Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin I’d never heard of this book. I’d never noticed its bulk on any library shelves nor had I ever seen its cover peeking out of a pocketbook or briefcase, and yet, I knew the story before I cracked the spine...perhaps from a dream. That’s exactly what reading this book feels like - a very strange and wonderful dream that I’m almost afraid to awaken from. The novel is set New York in a familiar, and at the same time, unfamiliar twentieth century. It was love at first “light”, but I’m a sucker for any text that turns narrative on its head. You see, the first few scenes of the novel are told entirely from the point of view of an escaped horse – an urban unicorn, I’d argue. Peter Lake, the protagonist, is the quintessential anti-hero. He’s bad, but good and you can’t help but root for him as he navigates the cold streets of ancient New York in search of...well, life itself I should say. It’s beautifully written in rich, descriptive language that envelops the reader in blankets of complex color. As a result, I found myself closing my eyes at the end of each scene and replaying them as if from memory. There aren’t many books out there like this one. In fact, it’s an adventure, a love story, a treatise against class division and a taste of what dreams are made of. I don’t want to give away any plot elements, but an Irish burglar and a valiant white horse sneak into a mansion on a cold winter’s day – the rest is his-story. Enjoy!!
