Born on this day in 1936, the brilliant Irish comedian known as Dave Allen. There is simply no good reason to ever do a show thats not a comedy. Every time I do, I regret it. God invented the stage to help people laugh, and this talented comic was a master. When I was growing up in Chicago in the 1970s and 80s, our PBS affiliate, WTTW Channel 11, broadcast Dave Allens best known BBC programme - Dave Allen At Large - for years. Simply brilliant stuff. It was a combination of sketch comedy (usually very short) and joke telling (usually seated at a chair, drinking a cocktail). A wonderful, brilliant show. I dont think I can share any of his youtube clips, since his jokes and sketches often included double entendres and other things I dont approve of on my page. But Ive gotta admit, in person...
