Bringing the epic opera LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES to life for the first time ever at Covent Garden is a star-studded cast of Bryan Hymel, Erwin Schrott, Lianna Haroutounian and Michael Volle who are set to deliver an unmissable performance to add to the grand slate of productions from the 2013/2014 Palace Opera & Ballet season. This is a rare opportunity for cinema audiences in Australia to see Verdi’s first five-act opera written for the Paris Opéra in an imaginative new staging by hot director of the moment, Stefan Herheim. Stefan Herheim’s production relocates the opera from 13th-century Sicily to Paris in 1855, and examines the nature of 19th century French grand opera and the conflicts between art and life’s harsh realities. Herheim takes us over the threshold from the reality of the opera house into the dreamlike stories of the operas performed there. In his production, the struggle between the French and Sicilians in Verdi’s opera becomes also a struggle between artists and those who use and abuse art. Hélène sung by Armenian soprano Lianna Haroutounian is held by Montfort the French governor sung by German baritone Michael Volle, who has had her brother executed. She turns to the partisan Jean Procida sung by Uruguayan bass Erwin Schrott and the rebellious patriot Henri sung by Bryan Hymel, Olivier Award-winning American tenor in her bid for vengeance. This tale of revenge, family relations and patriotism is set to dramatic music, full of impressive choruses, passionate duets and some wonderful showpiece arias and is conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera. It is set to delight audiences with the sheer scale of its story, music, passion, staging and performers. This exciting new production draws parallels between the opera and the opera house for which it was written, including a spectacular re-creation of the Paris Opéra itself. The production is visually stunning and is brought to life in stunning detail and in High Definition on the big screen. LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES was captured live at Covent Garden on November 4, and will screen across Australia from November 29 for an exclusive and limited season.
