British Gas has announced a 9.2 per cent increase in consumer gas prices. We know that hardworking people are facing high energy bills, so this announcement is disappointing. There’s something everyone can do which is to look to switch their electricity or gas bill from one supplier to another and on average this can help people save sometimes as much as £200 on their bills. So we’d encourage customers who are not happy with the service they’re getting and not happy with the prices to go to the switching sites online and see whether they can get a better deal. We want to help hard-pressed households with their bills. That’s why we’re legislating to force energy companies to put people on their lowest tariffs. We’re also encouraging more competition in the energy market and shale gas exploration to bring prices down.
