Broken Wing shared Broken Wings photo. about an hour ago . COMMENTARY OF GREG KEVAKIAN, FOUNDER OF BROKEN WING, FOR THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014 FACEBOOK SHOULD BE A SAFE FUN ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE! Good afternoon everyone. It is my hope that all of you are enjoying this Thursday with anticipation of sharing some quality time this weekend with your family, friends, and of course, with your feathered and furry companions. As most of you know, there is another Facebook page that devotes a lot of their content attacking me personally and that of Broken Wing. Yesterday, following Facebook guidelines, we asked via private messages that they remove pictures (our intellectual property) taken from our Facebook page and used without our permission for the purpose of harassing us on their page. Their response was a manifesto on their page authored by one of their followers stating that they are well-within their civil rights per the First Amendment. Of course, they were incorrect in that the First Amendment offers no protection from liability concerning slanderous and libelous material. Therefore, in this particular instance, our recourse was a simple one. We contacted legal counsel who advised and guided us in contacting Facebook corporate ending with a response in our favor by Facebook removing the post. If the slanderous and libelous behavior continues, our next recourse is to request that the page be shut down permanently. We have been successful in the past of having a similar page entitle Unlike Broken Wing classified as a hate group by Facebook and thus shut down. If the behavior from these people continues, I expect the same result here. My advice to these people is to go in peace and concentrate your efforts solely on those that come to you for help within the avian welfare community. However, if you choose otherwise and continue in your efforts to harass and slander people online, you will be opening a legal Pandoras box that you will be unable to close.
