Brunswick Community College, Economic and Workforce Development is hosting Four Sustainability Listening and Informational Sessions Location: Brunswick Community College main campus. Come join the conversation and share your ideas on how sustainability can create a competitive advantage to tourism, business and industry, the sciences, and governmental organization in our region. All the sessions will be on the main campus in Bolivia. Pre registration is required. We have divided the sessions into four clusters. Please join us in the session that best meets your area of expertese: 1. Tourism includes: Natural Resources, Hotels, Restaurants, and Entertainment. Our guest speaker will be Tom Rhodes, NC GreenTravel representative. Tom has a vast experience working on Energy & Water Efficiency, Local Government Recycling, Commercial, Industrial & Institutional Waste Reduction, and Waste Exchanges. He is also an EMSis sustainability consultant for business and industry, specializing in green hospitality and tourism. This session will be Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the BCC main campus. Due to limited space pre-registration is required. Len is the Engineering Architect Manager for the Energy Office and provides leadership for the Utility Savings Initiative. USI is a statewide lead-by-example program created to reduce energy consumption and costs in public facilities. In 2007, The Council of State Governments recognized the USI program with an Innovations Award. The program was initially established to provide assistance to state agencies and UNC institutions. Since the programs inception in 2002, the state has avoided more than $480 million in costs and 1.7 million metric tons of CO2e through efficiency efforts. The USI program now supports all public sector units including community colleges, K-12 public schools, county and local municipal governments. Len also oversees support and assistance for Performance Contracting in the public sector. In 2010 the Association of Energy Engineers recognized Len with the Region 2 Energy Manager of the Year Award. This session will be Thursday, February 13, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. on the main campus in Bolivia. Due to limited space pre-registration is required. Science includes: Biotechnology, Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Healthcare. Guest speakers John Seymour and Mark Blevins. Johns expertise includes: Energy Conservation, Fats, Oils and Grease, Hospital/Medical Waste, Industrial Waste Assessments, Lean and Green Manufacturing; E3, Pretreatment of Industrial Discharge, Printing Operations, State Agency Sustainability, Water Efficiency, Water Quality, Institutional Energy, Water and Waste Audits. Mark is the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension Director, who has extensive experience in sustainable agriculture. This session will be Thursday, February 20, 2014 from 3 to 5 p.m. on the main campus in Bolivia. Due to limited space pre-registration is required. Business and Industry includes: Retail, manufacturing, Energy, and Construction. Scott Fister will be our speaker. Scott is the co-manager of the Environmental Stewardship Initiative (ESI). He has 5 years’ experience working as a sustainability coordinator for Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina. ESI provides technical assistance and networking opportunities to stimulate the development and implementation of programs that use pollution prevention and innovative approaches to meet and go beyond regulatory requirements. Through ESI Scott works with companies to help reduce the impact on the environment beyond measures required by any permit or rule, producing a better environment, conserving natural resources and resulting in long-term economic benefits. Scott works with small, medium and large businesses, including manufacturing. This session will be Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the main campus in Bolivia.
