Businessless in Seattle? Well it didnt take very long to see the negative impacts of a unanimous vote by Seattles city council to raise the minimum wage to $15. In fact, it didnt even get a chance to take place...just the threat of the increase has businesses running away. Pagliacci Pizza has been voted Best Pizza in Seattle (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014), “Best workplace for recycling and waste reduction” (2010-12, 2014), “Best takeout food” among other notable awards for their pizza and business endeavors. They have 24 locations in and around the Seattle area. They are now a large enough pizza chain in the area that they even have a call center. They employ call handlers, delivery drivers, dough makers, sous chefs, hostesses, waiters and waitresses, management positions and accountants. Now they will be employing a lot more of them outside the city of Seattle. Alas, they may be one of the first to relocate, but they will not be the last. Two distinct things will happen to Seattle if they go ahead with their plans to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. 1. People will move to Seattle in hopes of getting paid more. 2. Businesses will leave Seattle in hopes of saving more. The result of those two factors = less people employed. It is a fine goal indeed to want to pay people more. Unfortunately for policy makers and ideologues that try and apply this philosophy by mandating it with laws...economic realities exist.
