By, Chief George Rutledge PO Frank Adamski # 19 Frank Joseph Adamski was born in the Bronx, N Y on October 2, 1910 and would later move with his family to Yonkers. As a youth Frank attended Yonkers elementary schools and graduated from Saunders High School. As a young man he listed his employment as a “Designer.” He was hired by the Yonkers Police Department from 53 Oak St. on November 16, 1939 with a starting salary of $1940 and was assigned to patrol duties in the 2nd precinct. When Pearl Harbor was attacked and the US entered WW-2, Frank enlisted in the Army and was granted a leave of absence from the department on June 1, 1942. He served as a PFC in the 77th Infantry Division, commonly referred to as the “Statue of Liberty Division.” This division participated in the battles in the Pacific for Okinawa, Guam, and the Philippines. His last billet was with the occupational forces in Japan. During his military service he was awarded many combat citations, including the Purple Heart. Frank was honorably discharged on December 1, 1945 and reinstated to the Police Department on December 16, 1945. Frank spent 27 years in the 2nd precinct but, on November 7, 1966 he was transferred to the 1st precinct. Frank was an easy going guy who was very well-liked by his coworkers and had a good singing voice. He was often used for singing at funerals held for members who had passed away or as a soloist at the Holy Name Society Masses. And because of his good voice in the late 1940s & 1950s he was also member of the Yonkers Police Department singing Glee Club. Frank had been a member of the Yonkers Police PBA, the Police Holy Name Society, the Fraternal Order of Police, NY Police & Fire Retirees and the NYS Federation of police. One of his brothers was ordained a priest. Frank retired from the police department on February 24, 1975, and died on April 6, 1996. He was 85 years old.
