CARIFTA TO START ON SATURDAY, by Alfons Juck, EME News FORT DE FRANCE (FRA): The next edition of the Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships, better known as Carifta Games will be held from Saturday to Monday this week in Martinique. Pierre Aliker Stadium here will witness the talent of Caribics in two categories (U18 and U20). It started back in 1972 in Barbados over the Easter weekend. Without exception, these championships have been held every year since then, at this time. It is expected that 27 teams will be represented, superb talent of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas among others, also European connection is there through participation of Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guyana, all belonging to France. First day highlight are the 100 m finals, second day 4x100 m relays and third day the 200 m. Among past winners many former and current stars of World of Athletics. One to be mentioned is the fastest human Usain Bolt who won the 2003 and 2004 editions of the U20 and 2002 edition of U18 and was second in the 2001 version. In 2004 clocked in Hamilton still valid World junior record 19.93 in the 200 m.
