CATALUNYA VOTES! Catalunya heads to their makeshift polls, some may call it a just a big opinion poll, as it won’t be recognised by Madrid. But the point Is that well over 60% of Catalans are intending on a YES vote for both questions. Not only do they want Catalunya recognised as a state but an independent one. The majority cannot be ignored even if Spanish unionists dismiss the whole vote as void, particularly when the rest of the world watches a movement of self determination being treated almost as a criminal offense by Spanish authorities. What will an unrecognised Yes vote achieve in Catalunya? Can they convince Madrid & the rest of Spain afterwards, that the process needs to become official & legal? Watching the ”9-N I’ll vote for you” video which is an emotional commercial about the process of independence of Catalonia, it is a timely reminder of the emotions felt in our own Yes campaign. I may not understand the words but I understand the message. A small campaign making a simple video has more impact than the governments negativity, sounds familiar. As famous Catalans dedicate their vote to other famous Catalans no longer with us, its a poignant reflection for us here in Scotland. I often think of some of the older campaigners I worked alongside during the referendum who may not be around next time. All the hard work from the multitudes of people from not just the SNP, who over the last 70years continued with the campaign for an independent Scotland. They wouldnt believe that wed get to 45% & then all pro-indy parties would boost massively like they have. I hope for Catalunya that the famous Catalans dedicating their vote today don’t see themselves being honoured in years to come with a new generation holding up their photo. Videos like this are powerful, i hope it resonates with voters. I expect a yes vote to be announced in Barcelona later on, that will be the start of their battle as next comes recognition from Madrid. And who knows maybe a second legal attempt might come in the near future. Lets hope its not so long for a second attempt for us or our friends in Catalunya.
