CESTA, the El Salvadorian Center for Appropriate Technologies, was founded by a group of professors in 1980 as one of the first NGOs in the country. One of CESTA’s main functions is as a communicator, denouncing environmental issues in the country, giving local communities access to national press to share information. The organization is involved in many campaigns for the protection of the countries natural resources and human wellbeing, and more recently, climate change. CESTAs activities reach around the country, through programs, events, and Eco-Centers, which serve as educational centers for the development of eco-techniques and appropriate technologies. Eco-Bici, located in San Marcos, focuses on the development of the bicycle as a mode of sustainable transportation for all kinds of people. Inside their huge bike shop, they fix old bikes, sell low cost bikes, teach bike maintenance and construction for free to at-risk urban youth. After receiving training, many of their students go on to create their own bikeshops in other areas. In the past, the center also developed Bici-máquinas or bike machines, but now a former student has taken this work to San Salvador. Eco-Center Animas is a training center and Permaculture school outside of Cojutepeque. For over 20 years, the center has worked in organic agriculture, as well as protecting a tropical forest nature reserve where many wild birds and animals are found. The center is a native seed sanctuary (see photos above), and serves primarily as a space for events and courses. CESTA also has various educational campaigns in local communities, giving free workshops on food security, agro-ecology, reforestation, nutrition, and natural medicine. CESTA accepts volunteers interested in any of their programs comuntierra.org/site/comunidades.php?id=95&id_idioma=2
