CHASING POSSESSIONS One of the great draw backs of capitalism - TopicsExpress

CHASING POSSESSIONS One of the great draw backs of capitalism is the preoccupation with things that it encourages. The businesses succeed when we consume. We are constantly subjected to advertisements which promise happiness through consumption. We spend enormous amounts of time trying to satisfy our wants through the accrual of things. We have become slaves to things. Things will never satisfy that inner sense of incompleteness. The answer to our incompleteness is not the acquisition of more things. We have some basic requirements that we need to satisfy in order to survive. Without food, shelter and some security we will suffer. The problem is we confuse the satisfaction we receive from possessions which satisfy our needs (food, shelter and security) with obtaining further possessions which do not offer the same fulfillment. New possessions provide some satisfaction but that satisfaction is limited. The more time we dedicate to chasing possession the less time we have for developing other aspects of life which can give us more pleasure and purpose than the endless pursuit of happiness through acquisition of new things. Healthy relationships take time, a healthy mind takes time, and a healthy body takes time. We have limited time and need to allocate that time effectively. Chasing satisfaction through obtaining possessions is a never ending chase. We will never have enough. There will always be more. When this becomes our only known path to satisfaction, we become a slave to an addiction which will never be satisfied…. Unless you Bill Gates. ~Troy Murphy Flourishing Life Society
