CLEAR CREEK ISD CON, 1/24/2015: This was the first year the school district attempted organizing a convention, which was set up in the halls of their high school. Im sure all of the words in that sentence were a turn-off to regular dealers, and Ill admit I signed up out of curiosity (and the fact that there really werent any cons to vend at in November and December)...so it was kind of a hail mary pass. Having said that, Im really glad I did. There were only maybe 20-25 vendors there, and most of those were craft tables and small niche stuff like plush dolls, etc. My booth and Bedrock City seemed to be the big draws, which equalled a great day for my bank account, lol. And Bedrock City barely even had a set-up - they just put some toys on the table, and brought a bunch of cardboard boxes full of cheap t-shirts. I was the only one who had gridwalls set up... The guy next to me didnt make any money (and Im sure there were several others who considered this show a bust)...all I can say is that their inventory didnt seem geared toward the younger kids, or were just not comic book/sci-fi specific. I dont know if Im right; its just an observation I made...it just seemed that the kids were more stimulated by that stuff than the homemade jewelry and incense sticks... As for attendance, there was a steady flow of kids the entire day, no real lulls until the last hour or so. According to the organizer, they pre-sold 500 tickets...there was easily double that throughout the show. Kids came dressed up in cosplay and were ready to have a genuine experience. Maybe I just got lucky and was a victim of circumstance, but I made about as much as I would at a normal big con on a Saturday. Pros: Good communication with organizer, easy load-in & out, small number of vendors ensured attendees disposable income wasnt spread out too thin, cheap vendor tables, cheap attendance tickets, free parking Cons: Only one day, possibly a one-time thing...but the organizers are hopeful this will continue in their district in the coming years, rotating between their different schools
