COULD YOU WASH YOUR NEIGHBOURS FEET..? This morning, I read - TopicsExpress

COULD YOU WASH YOUR NEIGHBOURS FEET..? This morning, I read again with amazement the story of Jesus washing His disciples feet in John 13. John tells us that it was evening just before the passover and Jesus knew the time had come to return to His Father. He also knew even as the evening meal was being served that the devil was already at work. It is however this particular passage (verse 2-5) that fills me with awe... Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. This was not a time of fragrant foot washes or anti-bacterial soap. Jesus would not have had a fluffy, soft towel wrapped around his waist in fact the word towel is a generous translation - it would have been a loincloth barely covering HIm. The cloth would have been coarse and by the time He had washed 24 feet (including those of the man about to betray Him) , wet, soggy and dirty despite the fact that He was just about to suit down to a meal. The Son of God Himself, the Prince of Peace, the one who was there when the heavens and earth were created (Proverbs 8:27) was washing off the dust, animal feaces and mud the disciples would have walked in as they journeyed with him in at best sandals, through dusty roads and fields shared with livestock. Jesus explains - “Do you understand what I was doing? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you. I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message. Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them. Coud I do this? Have I shown such humility when asked to do tasks that I have considered beneath my status? Have I washed my neighbours feet in church, in my neighbourhood, in my place of work? Not literally but symbolically. Jesus takes off His robe to perform this task, He strips almost naked before His disciples, humbling Himself completely before them, despite knowing exactly who He was and what He could do. Those same hands that healed and called forth the dead into life now washed feet. To do this He would have knelt before them....What love, what grace. Do we understand what He has done and now that we know these things...how do we do them so that we may be blessed? These days we dont have to wash others feet literally but we can lend a helping hand. In humility we can bear our brothers burdens, we can share what we have, we can ensure that we do not consider anyone to low or too beneath us to warrant our time and love. We too must take off our worldly robes of status and do as He did ..clothed only by His grace! Its not easy, the world tells us to behave differently but thats the thing...we are not of this world...We are citizens of heaven, we are followers of Christ!!! This weekend, reach out to someone who needs you or just needs a hand and in humility be like our saviour to them! Surprise someone with generosity, compassion and grace, lift up the broken, Lets ask the Holy Spirit to teach us humility... Im going to ...I hope you do too. Be blessed in all you do, May the Lord keep you in the shadow of His wings and may His light shine upon you! Please like, comment, share and for more please like the FB page - His Love Within
