CRAIGBOURNE DAM CLOSED... Tasmanian Irrigation wishes to advise the Craigbourne Dam in Tasmanias South East has been closed to fishing and recreational activities as a precaution due to the detection of blue-green algae. Elevated levels of the naturally occurring blue-green algae have been detected in the dam since late October, 2013. After consulting with the Department of Primary industries (DIPIPWE) and the Department of Health (DHHS), TI implemented a monitoring program of the bloom. The latest samples indicated that the bloom is not toxic, however the level of algae within the dam is within the high hazard range and presents a potential risk to human health, as contact with the water could cause skin irritations and accidental ingestion of the algae may result in gastrointestinal illness. Consequently, Tasmanian Irrigation has taken the step of closing the dam to the public until the algal bloom reduces. Tasmanian Irrigation is continuing to monitor the algal bloom and will re-open the dam once monitoring reveals return to normal levels. There will be no impact on irrigation as a result of this action. An update will be provided later in the week.
