Calling all birders!!!! Wednesday, January 28th 9am - a special offering. Hot Springs and birding seem to be a great combo in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico - Sierra County, NM or so our guests tell us. The National Audubon Society even agrees by designating 4 IBA (Important Birding Areas) in or around the City of Truth or Consequences, NM. Not a bad place to be this time of year or for that matter any time of year if you are a birdwatcher. We understand there are over 300 species of our feathered friends who either live, migrate or come here to raise their young. We have enjoyed rare bird sighting such as the Brown Heron, Common Black Hawk, Black-bellied Plover, Sanderling, Brown Pelican, Laughing Gull and more since we have been paying attention. We have seen wild canaries at the feeders here in the courtyard at La Paloma Hot Springs & Spa during their migration - it seems they enjoy the thistle feeders. Here are the IBA locations near us: Elephant Butte Reservoir - the largest lake in New Mexico Emory Pass - (8200 feet) located in the Black Range of southwestern New Mexico midway between Hillsboro and San Lorenzo. Ladder Ranch - owned by Ted Turner is currently being managed for its biodiversity. Desert grassland and riparian habitats offer a wide range of bird-life both migrant and breeding. The ranch is being managed for its rich biodiversity by a conservation minded owner. Caballo/Percha/Palomas area - Percha Dam State Park is a relatively manicured, open Bosque of cottonwoods with picnic tables and campsites. Caballo Lake is 18 miles long and holds almost 350,000 acre-feet of water. The Palomas Marsh is located at the northern most point of Caballo Lake acre-feet of water. The Palomas Marsh is located at the northern most point of Caballo Lake. So whether you are with an organization such as the Southwest New Mexico Audubon Society or simply enjoy the birds in your own private way.
