Calling all game developers in the Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver areas! We are researchers from two Canadian universities who are interested in learning more about the work environment of video game developers. We are interested in interviewing people who work in the core areas of game development (i.e., programmers, designers, visual and audio artists, testers) and who could be leads, but do not have line-managerial roles. We are interested in talking to people who work in all types of studios (i.e. indie, console or platform manufacturer-owned (first party developers), linked by contract to a console or platform manufacturer (2nd party developer), linked by contract to a publisher (3rd party) or publisher-owned (in-house development studio). We will be asking questions about your job, working conditions, daily work routine, income security and the policies of your studio. Our interviews will take place face-to-face at a mutually convenient time and place and we will compensate participants $40. The interview will last approximately 90 minutes and will be audio recorded. The information that you provide will be used in articles and presentations aimed at academic and industry audiences and also form the basis of a larger survey in later phases of the research. We are committed to maintain confidentiality of the identity of participants and their studios through the use of pseudonyms and generic demographic data (i.e., female programmer, 35, Vancouver). A complete consent form and confidentiality contract will be provided and signed by both parties prior to the interview. This research project named Coping With risk: regulation and work citizenship in the project-based context is supported by a national grant from the Government of Canada and has been approved by the ethics boards at both of our institutions.
