Can some fan of Marilynne Robinsons Housekeeping please weigh in - TopicsExpress

Can some fan of Marilynne Robinsons Housekeeping please weigh in precisely on why its allegedly so good? I ask because, although it is unimpeachably well written, I have also never experienced a novel so hermetic, immobile, and incidentless in my life; as if its one long 200-page prose poem. I ask this because I have a theory that, in the pre-MFA era, our world classics really DID have to rely on a combination of sentences, plot and character (reaching its apotheosis among the Victorians, who wrote lively stories with careful language), but that Housekeeping represents something that might have been impossible in the pre-MFA era: the triumph of Sentence over every other novelistic pleasure. Please feel free to discuss. Its only 200 pages and I intend to try it again someday. But what the hell do its biggest fans get out of it?
