“Cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals – the supreme creation of an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists.” -Roland Barthes. 1915-1980, French theorist and philosopher The most important aspect of American Dreaming, our documentary film, is to give credit to the artists, and recognize their artwork and its contributions to bringing us beauty (via the automobiles they designed). During the production of this documentary Co-producers, Greg Salustro and Robert Edwards feel privileged to talk with the artists, and help tell their individual stories from the front lines of automotive design - 1946-1973. American Dreaming started the new year with two very-full days of filming. Bill & Pat Porter graciously hosted American Dreaming and crew for over 12-hours while we filmed retired automotive designers Del Coates, Bernie Smith. A very informative (and entertaining!) round table discussion developed (with Del, Bernie and Bill.) Del Coates, Studebaker designer (1956 - 58) worked under Duncan McRae. Dels insights and comments are terrific! Del taught for many years at College for Creative Studies, beginning in 1965 and also authored a book on product design titled “Watches Tell More Than Time”. Bernie Smith started as a designer in 1950 -- the Harley Earl Era. He had a very successful and interesting career and is revered by all who worked with him. Among his accomplishments; heading-up the Preliminary Design Studio (comprised of GM’s best “hot” new design talent) created by Chuck Jordan. Bernie also told us of his contribution to one of the most famous concept cars in history, the Buick LaSabre.
