Centre for Cognition & Decision Making invites you to a seminar «Magnetoreception: The sixth sense of birds» by Dominik Heyers Postdoc at Department of Biology, University of Oldenburg, Germany, AG Animal Navigation/Neurosensorik Imagine being kidnapped and thrown out of the trunk of a car in the middle of nowhere. You better have two pieces of equipment in your pockets: (1) a compass to determine and maintain the direction home, and (2) a map to obtain positional information (to set the compass course accordingly). Could the Earth’s magnetic field provide these two types of information? Migratory birds have convincingly been shown to use the Earth’s magnetic field as an orientation cue on their fascinatingly precise journeys between breeding and wintering grounds. However, the question, how magnetic fields are sensed, has remained unanswered. Currently, three main magnetoreception hypotheses are discussed: a light-dependent chemical compass sense associated with the visual system, a recently suggested involvement of the vestibular system, and an iron-mineral-based sense located in the upper beak. My talk aims to give a general overview on the principles underlying magnetoreception by providing fascinating insights into the brain of migratory birds.
