Checked the box today where the bluebird pair have been building and to my surprise the nest is finished. Normally the bluebirds around here use dried grasses to build nests although I know in other places they may use pine needles. Mama blue has a deep bottom layer of pine needles and the top layer is dried grass. I guess she wanted to use both or she ran out of pine needles. We only have a few small pine trees around here. Our woods are filled with oaks, maples, hickory nut, black walnut and so on. I assume thats the reason these woods are filled with squirrels, flying squirrels and chipmunks, they love the bounty of nuts. Anyway, not sure when mama blue will start laying her eggs but I hope she waits a little while since we still have some cold weather ahead and even the warmer days in March bring some very cold nights.
