Child abuse is a trending topic after the recent exposure of an incident in Kampala. The main backlash is against house helps and nannies. Important aspects that should be highlighted include that 1) Children can present a significant challenge to a teenage house help with little or no prior experience in childcare; 2) No one set out in life to be a house help, rather in our setting this is a way of getting by when school ends prematurely. They are often under paid and minimally supervised which makes for low morale; 3) Discipline is the primary responsibility of parents, and to enable smooth child care, parents must set out structure and guidelines to nannies and to their children; 4) Parents need to keep open channels of communication and an open mind when receiving criticism about their children from the care giver.....When physical or emotional child abuse is occurring one can pick up these signs: 1) A child has frequent injuries, not well explained and not play-related that tend to occur on bony prominences; 2) The child may be withdrawn, passive, depressed and cries often OR is aggressive and violent with peers and pets; 3) May have nightmares that cause sleep disruption and tiredness; 4) May show fear of the perpetrator and avoid contact by staying out playing for long or being unduly unhappy when parents leave; 5) The caregiver is unwilling to talk about injuries. If you do come across these signs do involve a pediatrician, teacher and counselors who may be able to help define the problem and activate the appropriate agencies....
