Chilling, sobering post. Regardless of pay, scoring a film is hard, brutal, physically draining work. In regards to the value of music--- or anything in the film business-- I relay my fathers admonition of many years ago: Son, let me tell you a paradox about business : Business only has the money for what it WANTS, it never has the money for what it NEEDS. Make yourself someone they WANT, and you shall always be employed. Do something they only only NEED, and it will be a struggle all your life. Today, manifestly, music is something that is primarily needed and not wanted, hence the current state of affairs regarding scoring here in Hollywood. No one wants music, they only need it. Hence, what they are willing to pay. Hence, what they are willing to settle for. Reality. Sound effects=music. Worth about the same.( Check how much each is worth per second in a film...) .... unless..... youre what they WANT!
