Chisholm KOs Black Bears Junior tight end Karsten Brady scored each time he touched the ball, catching a career-high three of Taggart Brown’s five touchdown passes, and afterward summed up Chisholm’s 49-7 rout of visiting Pawnee on Friday as well as any. “That was pretty fun.” The Longhorns (7-1, 3-1) held Pawnee without a first down for nearly the entire first half, and without a point until a Marlon Houston Jr. touchdown pass against a reserve defense with eight seconds left in the game, as Chisholm piled up points in the middle quarters to coast late. Brown’s first completed pass went 50 yards to Brady, the first of three long scoring connections between the two, to give Chisholm an 8-0 lead it wouldn’t surrender. Brown hit Danner Kiernan short after faking a handoff on fourth and three from Pawnee’s 10-yard line, and Kiernan snuck into the left corner of the end zone to give the Longhorns a 15-0 lead to start the second quarter. Later in the quarter, Brady caught another scoring pass from Brown on the first play following a Bailey Cross interception of Houston, striding unimpeded for a 43-yard score. Austin Swann bookended halftime with long scores, snatching a jump ball away from Godberson and sprinting 83 yards to close the first half with a touchdown, and taking a reverse 44 yards for a score on Chisholm’s first offensive touch of the second half. Brady ended the night for Chisholm’s starters with a 74-yard touchdown catch from Brown on the Longhorns’ very next touch to complete a 41-point outburst in the second and third quarters, and Cross, the backup quarterback, hit Beaux Biggers for a 35-yard score on his only completion of the night to put the Longhorns up 49-0. So yeah, as Brady put it, Chisholm had fun. “This is a lot of fun,” Brown said. “I love getting my receivers the ball. They deserve it after all the work in the summer, and my offensive line just keeps on blocking. I love it.” Chisholm running back Bryce Stewart wrapped an abridged night with 52 yards on 12 carries, Britton Yunker ran five times for 40 yards and Brown finished the highest-scoring outing of his career with 282 yards and five scores on 8-for-13 passing. “Coach said it was our best practice (this season), and we knew coming in if we win this game, we have a pretty good chance at the playoffs,” said Brady, whose three touchdown catches totaled 167 yards. “We just went out there and executed really well.” “They were just doing so much to stop the run,” Chisholm coach Joey Reinart said. “We have the potential to do that. We’ve got enough athletes to do that.” Chisholm allowed only 45 total yards in the first half, holding Pawnee (2-6, 0-5) without a first down until its final drive of the opening two frames and forcing three turnovers: Cross’ interception, as well as a Zach Swafford pick on a reverse pass from Pawnee tailback Browning Nicolet and a Stewart recovery on a Nicolet fumble. Chisholm inched another step closer to clinching its first playoff berth since 2002 with the win as losses by Tonkawa (34-6 to Alva) and Newkirk (32-0 to Hennessey) put the Longhorns in third place in district 2A-1, with a head-to-head tiebreaker and a game in hand against current second-place holder Alva. A win against host Newkirk (3-5, 1-3) next week guarantees that playoff spot. “It’s incredible to see that,” Brady said. “We went 1-9 my freshman year and 5-5 last year, and we just keep building on that.” The win also ensured the Longhorns’ best finish since 1996, when Chisholm finished 8-4.
