Chortens are usually surrounded by prayer flag and prayer wheels. The flag are often white in color, representing purity of thought and are supposed to carry the faithful on the wings of wind. Made of strip of cloth in oblong rectangular or triangular shape, with holy inscription and lucky sign printed on them, these prayer flags are of four types. Those four luck are long narrow and oblong shaped victory banners and have a substantial amount of text on them, whereas other bear the symbol of the dorji(thunderbolt). The ‘wind horse’ flags depict a horse with a jewel on its back. Prayer flags are an integral part of the landscape_ no hilltop trees and buildings. The prayer wheel has holy mantras inscribed on them and rotating them brings a feeling of peace and tranquility besides good luck. So go ahead give those. Wheels a spin or bay your own personal handheld prayer wheel like those frequently seen in the hands of monk and other devotees. These are usually found in shops conveniently located near most Gompas.
