Chris posting as Marija I managed to do some semi-major repair - TopicsExpress

Chris posting as Marija I managed to do some semi-major repair work on my bike this weekend: I took apart the rear rocker box and replaced the gaskets, which were leaking (a common issue with rubber mount Sportsters - mines a 2009). It took me about 5 hours ... but the bike ran fine the next day with no more leaks: 150 miles RT Denver - Colorado Springs and back. This saved me a couple hundred bucks in labor. I used Cometic metal gaskets, not the stock HD ones. Ive done a lot of my own electrical work, but this is my first real top-end / motor project. I finally learned to use the torque wrenches Ive had for awhile. Why did I post this? Im just quite pleased with how it turned out, and I am grateful to the Lord for the gift of motorcycles and the satisfaction of accomplishment that comes with doing a bit of my own wrenching. But most precious to me is the fact I got to teach my three oldest boys who were with me during the project. There is nothing like a Dad and his sons sharing this sort of experience; its these simple things that matter in the long run. One of the messages of Opus Dei is that we can find holiness in anything honest work we do. Monsignor Escriva may not have specially mentioned motorcycle maintenance in The Way...but it must have just been an oversight :-)
