Christmas is awesome. Im terrified to say that out loud because I feel like a Muslim S.W.A.T. team is going to barge through my door and throw me into a van for saying that. I dont celebrate Christmas, but Im not gonna lie, I love everything about it. The songs. The presents. And my goodness, the lights. I LOVE Christmas lights. I remember as a kid Id beg my mom to take me along for every mundane errand shed go on, just so I could sit in the car and have her drive past houses with Christmas lights. Ive never been so excited to go to the Post Office in my life. And when I see a house without Christmas lights, I get all angry like WHAT THE HECK IS THEIR PROBLEM? WHERE IS THEIR CHRISTMAS SPIRIT? STUPID GRINCHES. I dont celebrate Christmas. But when Im at a store and the cashier wishes me a Merry Christmas, I get a little giddy hearing that. And what am I gonna do, correct her like Oh, Im a Muslim and dont celebrate Christmas. Here, read this pamphlet on Islam that was printed in 1952. Im not a scholar, so I wont waste any time saying that Christmas is ok to celebrate or isnt. You probably arent either, so dont waste your time. Thats not what Im getting at yo. Im just sayin, as an outside observer, Christmas is pretty awesome. I think Christmas being awesome is a testament to a bigger void in my heart - the fact that Ramadan isnt cool to me. Ramadan is the most beautiful month of spirituality, charity and community that God could ever given us. We as humans just havent made it culturally cool. Its fun to debate the best Christmas movies of all time, and its even more fun to tell people theyre stupid for not mentioning Home Alone 2. Now lets debate the best Ramadan movies of all time... oh wait there arent any. Theres no story of how Abdul saved the mosque from going hungry. Theres more than a billion of us that celebrate this holiday, and not one person could have picked up a video camera to talk about it? And what about songs? Christmas songs are dope. Mariah Carey, Michael Buble and even Justin Bieber have dropped hot fire on Christmas. Sure, a few people have put out Ramadan songs. But honestly, are any of them any good? I mean like REALLY GOOD. Is anybody humming them while fasting? Are they blasting on the loud speaker when you step into a Halal meat grocery store? Nope. And its not like there arent any mainstream Muslim artists. Why cant DJ Khaled drop a Ramadan track that blows up the internet where it starts off like DJ KHALED!!!! WE GRINDIN ON THAT FAST FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET. WE MAKING BREAD BUT JUST NOT EATING IT! WE THE BESTTTTTTTTT!
